Identifying Gambling Addiction

The line between normal and problematic gambling has been blurred by the introduction of emerging technology. Traditionally, gambling involved risks of money, belongings, and an element of chance. Increasingly, people engage in different forms of gambling that make identifying gambling addiction difficult. One of the main characteristics of a gambling addiction is the presence of strong urges. Insomnia, depression, and stress are common symptoms of this disorder. Therefore, it is essential to find help early and often.

Gambling can be defined as the activity of placing a wager on an uncertain event. In some instances, the result of the wager may be determined by chance, while in other cases it can be the result of an individual’s miscalculation. No matter the form of gambling, the ultimate goal of all gambling activities is to win. But while the goal of gambling is to gain profit, many people indulge in this activity because it can be both entertaining and gratifying at the same time.

A person can also get high on gambling if it is an escape from boredom. In some cases, it can be a way to alleviate boredom. But for many people, gambling is a self-soothing behavior that relieves boredom and offers a social outlet. Other forms of relief include exercising, spending time with friends who do not gamble, and practicing relaxation techniques. However, gambling is not the only way to get high.
